Are native plants no-maintenance?
Unfortunately not. They are lower maintenance than lawns, but your neighbor’s invasive plants and the existing weed seeds will try to return and must be kept at bay.
What care do Native plants require?
Native plants need weekly watering in their first year, since they are getting used to their new home, putting down roots, and facing pressures from previous plants. After their first year, they are self-sufficient and begin spreading to fill the space. For optimal success, plantings should be managed monthly or quarterly.
Will the planting look the same all the time?
Unlike highly cultivated plants from Europe and Asia, native plants are on the wild side. They grow and change. We often use the “Sleep, Creep, Leap” to describe their growing process for first three years. These plants desire community and grow together, often where they are happiest. The beauty is in its maturity, changeability, and growth.
Are native plants deer-proof?
Unfortunately not. However, if deer are present, we will recommend plants that deer usually find unpalatable. Like humans, deer have different preferences and often try new things, especially hungry deer or fawns. Native plants are used to grazers and often re-grow if munched.
What does the winter interest look like?
Most native plants in Kentucky are deciduous, though some hold their leaves longer than others. Many natives have interesting seed heads, colorful berries, colored branches, and stunning fall colors.
How long are the flowers in bloom?
Each species varies in its bloom length from a few weeks, to several months, to the whole growing season! Designs always include plants blooming in different seasons for continual blooms during the growing season. They look different throughout the growing season!
Will the plants die and come back?
Yes, they are perennial and go dormant in winter. They return more heartily the following year.
